Oh, Come on! Everyone loves a good dog movie even if you don’t own a canine friend. Dog movies could be of different genres and plots- some sad and most of them a lot of fun. Here’s a list of the top 10 dog movies you wouldn’t want to miss!
Top 10 Dog Movies
1. 101 Dalmatians
Let’s begin with the classic – the original animated 101 Dalmatians movie. The film is based on the novel by Dodie Smith and was adapted by Walt Disney. There was also this live-action remake.
The Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita belongs to a married couple Roger and Anita. Perdita gives birth to puppies and Anita’s friend Cruella De Vil wants to buy them. Roger refuses Cruella and she steals the puppies. Pongo and Perdita go to rescue their babies and many others along their way. A beautiful movie portraying family ties and values.
2. Air Bud and Air Buddies
Air Bud revolves around a lonely young boy who’s too shy to try out for the basketball team until he meets a golden retriever he names Buddy who has an uncanny ability to play the game. Air Buddies are babies of Air Bud and honestly, I – Muffy is learning tricks from them. Seriously! You outta watch this!
3. Benji
Benji is a stray mutt who become friends with Chapmans and their kids. The kids are kidnapped and Benji sets out to rescue them risking his own life.
What a movie, I tell you! It teaches us that a little kindness will go a long way!
4. Bolt
Bolt finds its place here because it is a fun movie. It is the story of a dog named Bolt who is a television superstar. However, he believes that the superpowers of his character are real.
5. Eight Below
I didn’t know of this movie until Mommy read about it on one of her favorite blogger’s space. Soumya Prasad is participating in the A to Z Challenge and her theme is Movies. Mommy knew that she ought to watch this one and she was simply blown away. Thanks, Soumya. We love you
Jerry Shepard is a guide at a research base in Antartica. When a fellow scientist presses him to move to Mount Melbourne, Jerry realizes that the only way is with the help of a dog sled comprising of eight dogs. However, when disaster strikes, the team has to evacuate leaving the dogs behind. Jerry thinks he would come back soon and refuses to abandon them. The movie is all about true friendship.
6. Hatchi: A Dog’s Tale
Based on a true story! A college professor takes home an abandoned dog. They form an unbreakable bond over the years. Hachi goes to the railway station and waits for the professor until he returns from work. One day, the professor dies during his lecture and never returns. He waits for hours until the professor’s family tries to get him home. Hachi however, doesn’t understand. He waits there in the station at his usual spot. Years pass and Hachi waits until he no longer can.
7. Lady & the Tramp
“One of the best Disney movies”, says Momma. As the name suggests, it is the love story of Lady and a stray dog. However, the movie is much more than a love story. It teaches you how to be loyal and affectionate, protective and passionate. Super cute and a definite watch! Ah well, I hope I find ‘My Lady’ too, someday, somewhere! Hush! Don’t tell Mamma.
8. Marley & Me
A truly heart-breaking movie this one. My mommy saw this movie only recently, three days before my arrival- to be precise. Watching the movie with Daddy she told him that they would never get a dog in their lives because my parents are like that – they would love a dog like their baby. And at that point of time, I was on my way home as a surprise from Dadda. Lol!
I am just like Marley these days, Mommy says – Disobedient, Unruly and Incorrigible. However, the couple loves him in spite of his destructive behaviour. Marley is the nucleus of the family and he helps the couple and later their kids. I can see my Mommy in tears now as she types this. She has hugged me tight and has showered me with kisses. Phew!
9. The Adventures of Milo and Otis
Ultimate movie about the friendship between a cat and a dog. It is simply adorable and makes you go Aww, every single moment. Reminds me of Mommy’s Dad’s Simba and Chakki.
10. White Fang
This movie is based on the novel by Jack London. The story revolves around an explorer who befriends a half-dog half-wolf who he names White Fang. The man and dog lose each other several times throughout their lives but always somehow find one another again.
Other popular movies you can watch are: A Dog’s Purpose, Cats & Dogs, Hotel for Dogs, Old Yeller, Snow Dogs, The Fox & the Hound, The Shaggy Dog, and the Underdog.
Tell me how many of these have you watched? Which is your favorite dog movie? Any other which is not in this list that Mommy and I should watch? Let us know!

I love the Lassie movies and Greyfriars Bobby which even today makes me cry. And so see the Incredible Journey too – all old movies that are really well told stories. And have you seen Lad a Dog ? Perhaps those prints don’t exist anymore but I remember seeing them at movie nights…in the Officers’ Club
Hatchi will always be my favorite movie with a dog in it! I remember crying buckets in the movie and then I watched it again with my sis and we both cried buckets. It is one of the most beautiful movies that preaches ‘love’ in general.
ALl brilliant ones Shalini!
Ones that take us to a different level of emotions.

Balto is based on a true story too. There is a statue of him in New York. Balto was a lead sled dog in 1925, bringing serum to children in Nome, Alaska, during a diphtheria epidemic.
Where the Red Fern Grows is about a boy who raised two red-bone coon hounds. It’s a real tear-jerker! Just reading the synopsis to remind myself of the story brought tears to my eyes! It was a book first.
Lady and the Tramp is such a cute classic!
Besides movies with dogs, there are the movies “for” dogs, or movies our dogs watch! My goldendoodle loves White Chicks. It’s his favorite movie!
I’ve just watched 3 on the list and the rest has been marked as to be watched. A Dog’s Purpose was beautiful and the last scene just melted my heart!
I’m so glad you loved Eight Below. Such a beautiful movie, isn’t it? That movie shows what friendship and sticking together means <3
Except for a couple of these movies, I have seen them all, cried buckets, hugged CHikoo and remembered Chikoo, too, after he passed over. But, that’s how dog movies are!
I love Eight Below, Hatchi, Marley and Me, and Lady and the tramp. The last one I saw years ago, when in college.
Eight Below always makes me cry (of course, that’s not the only one listed that does…)

Oh I absolutely adored Marley and Me & Hachi – both movies made me cry so much! I too once had a little dog that went away too soon. I havent had the heart to keep another one after that. Maybe just reading about you Muffkins might change all that 🙂
I am bookmarking this post. Have seen 5-6 from the list. Will surely watch the others. 101 Dalmatians, Hatchi and Marley and me are the favorites and those of the kids as well.
There are so many movies that I am yet to watch! All must be great.
Loved the first one in your list-101 Dalmatians.
