Book Review: This Weekend Doesn’t End Well for Anyone by Catherine Mack

The story takes place at a luxury resort in the Bahamas during a mystery writers’ conference. It sounds like the perfect getaway: beautiful beaches, talented authors, networking opportunities, and plenty of cocktails.
Unfortunately, someone ends up dead.
As secrets begin to surface and tensions rise among the attendees, it becomes clear that almost everyone has something to hide. What follows is a fast-paced mystery packed with suspicious characters, unexpected twists, and plenty of opportunities for readers to play detective.

One of the things I appreciated most was that the novel never takes itself too seriously. While there is a murder to solve, the book maintains a playful energy throughout, making it incredibly entertaining to read.
The real star of the novel is Eleanor. She is witty, observant, and wonderfully self-aware. Reading from her perspective felt like having a friend lean over and whisper amusing commentary while the chaos unfolded around her. Her narration adds a layer of humour that elevates the entire story. There were several moments where I found myself smiling simply because of the way she described people and situations.
For readers who enjoy narrators with strong personalities, Eleanor is reason enough to pick up this book.
I also have a weakness for mysteries set in unusual locations, and the Bahamas setting worked perfectly. The contrast between luxury vacation vibes and murder creates a delicious sense of tension. One minute you’re imagining sunshine, palm trees, and ocean views. The next, you’re trying to figure out which character might be capable of murder. The tropical backdrop gives the novel an escapist quality that makes it especially enjoyable as a summer read.
Another aspect I loved was the mystery writers’ conference setting.
Readers get a fun peek behind the curtain of the writing and publishing world. There are references to authors, conferences, publishing dynamics, and mystery genre conventions that add an extra layer of enjoyment. Book lovers and aspiring writers will likely appreciate these details even more. The novel feels like a love letter to mystery fiction while also gently poking fun at the genre.
In a gist, here’s what you can expect from this book.
💫murder💫mayhem💫mystery💫everyone’s a suspect

Absolutely.
While there are clearly relationships, references, and character histories that carry over from earlier books, I never felt completely lost. In fact, the book made me curious about the previous installments rather than confused by them. Readers who are new to the series should have no trouble following the mystery, though longtime fans will probably enjoy the character dynamics on an even deeper level.
