October has arrived, bringing with it a chill in the air, pumpkin spice everything, and that perfect excuse to curl up under a blanket with a book that sends shivers down your spine. And what better prompt for this month’s #ReadingWithMuffy challenge than a good old Locked Room Mystery?
This subgenre of mystery fiction has always fascinated me. The idea that a crime, often a murder, takes place in a seemingly impossible situation. A room sealed from the inside, a snowbound mansion, a remote island with no escape… and yet, the culprit is among them. The tension, the puzzles, the claustrophobic suspense- it all make for a perfect October read.
Whether you love the classic whodunits or prefer modern psychological twists, this month’s prompt has something for everyone.
🐾 My Pick for October:
I’m diving into The Guest List by Lucy Foley, a modern Agatha Christie-style thriller set on a windswept island off the Irish coast. There’s a wedding, a storm, and you guessed it- a murder. Every character has secrets, and every chapter peels back another layer of deceit. It’s the perfect book to pair with a cup of hot chocolate, a cozy throw, and Muffy snuggled by my side.

🕵️♂️ A Few Locked Room Mystery Recommendations:
If you’re still deciding what to read, here are a few titles that fit the theme perfectly:
- And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie – The ultimate classic. No one does it better.
- The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton – A time-twisting, mind-bending mystery that will keep you guessing till the last page.
- The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji – A Japanese homage to Christie with a sharp, eerie edge.
- The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley – A locked apartment building, a missing brother, and a whole lot of secrets.
- Death and the Conjuror by Tom Mead – A brilliant tribute to Golden Age mysteries, complete with a magician detective!
