There’s just something about rainy days that makes you want to pause, sip on something hot, and curl up with a book that makes your heart full. As the world outside gets soaked and slows down, I find myself craving stories that are cozy, comforting, or compelling enough to pull me into another world entirely.
As a new mom, I don’t get as much reading time as I used to, and that’s okay. On most days, I steal quiet reading moments between feeds, naps, and golden retriever cuddles. But when it rains, it feels like permission to pause and indulge in something I love.

So, here are some of my favourite rainy day reads, across genres, that you can reach for when the skies turn grey and your soul wants a story.
Romance:
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
Two strangers share a flat and a bed at different times of day. What begins as awkward Post-it note communication turns into something tender, healing, and hilarious. This is warm, funny, and surprisingly emotional- the perfect rainy-day hug in book form.

Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood
This one’s for the nerdy romance lovers! A fake-dating plot, academic rivals, and surprisingly soft banter. Bonus: Hazelwood’s signature STEM-girl leads and complex emotions. You can also check out her latest: Problematic Summer Romance

Fantasy:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
A magical circus that appears only at night. A slow-burn romance. A duel of destinies. This book is atmosphere. It’s the kind of story that wraps around you like fog- moody, rich, and unforgettable.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Wholesome, quirky, and full of heart. This book is like sipping hot chocolate while wrapped in a blanket. It’s about found family, magical kids, and the courage to change your life.
Thriller:
The Guest List by Lucy Foley
A glamorous wedding on a remote Irish island. Secrets. Murder. Tension so thick, you’ll forget to sip your tea. It’s Agatha Christie vibes with a modern twist.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
If you want something darker, creepier, and unputdownable, this is it. A writer discovers a disturbing manuscript by a famous author… and nothing is what it seems. Read this with all the lights on.
Children’s Books (All Age Groups):
0–1 yrs: With Dad by My Side by Soosh
Gorgeous illustrations and minimal text make this a soothing read-aloud. It celebrates father-child bonds and is perfect for bedtime snuggles.
Toddlers: Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Rhythmic and lyrical, a bear sleeps through a wintry gathering in his cave. Toddlers love the repetition, and it’s great for story time.
Young Kids: The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
A clever mouse and an invented monster, only the monster turns out to be real! Witty and imaginative, it’s a rainy day classic.
Teens: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
A timeless story with lush descriptions and heart. Perfect to read while it rains, especially if you love quiet, charming characters and poetic writing.
Young Adult(YA):
Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
A sprinkle of magic, a lot of heartache, and ballroom dance. I loved how it explores grief, love, and learning to live again.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Comforting, light-hearted, and full of butterflies. Lara Jean’s letters spark unexpected romance- it’s sweet, clean, and perfect for a cozy day.

Historical Fiction:
The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
A gorgeously written story set in 1950s Jaipur. Full of color, emotion, and the complex dance between tradition and independence.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Narrated by Death, this WWII novel is heartbreaking, lyrical, and unforgettable. Read it on a rainy afternoon and expect tears.
Romantasy:
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
A cursed princess, magic, and a journey of sisterhood and strength. It’s fairytale-esque and absolutely bingeable.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
If you love whimsical romance with just the right amount of danger, heartbreak, and magic, this one’s for you. Oh, and hello Jacks.
Japanese Fiction:
Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa
Starts with dorayaki, ends with heartbreak and quiet hope. This gentle novel talks about connection, dignity, and finding meaning in the everyday. Perfect with a warm drink.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
What if you could travel back in time but only for the length of time your coffee stays warm? This one’s quietly magical and reflective, ideal for slow, rainy mornings.

Memoir:
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
A deeply moving memoir on grief, food, and identity. If you’re in the mood to cry under a blanket while the sky does too, this one will hold you close.
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
Hilarious, touching, and incredibly eye-opening, this memoir of growing up in apartheid South Africa will make you laugh, think, and feel deeply.
Mystery:
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Senior citizens solving murders in a retirement village, it’s charming, witty, and perfect with rain pattering on your windows.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
Set in Botswana, this cozy mystery is about gentle problem-solving and the beauty of simplicity. A comforting read with a warm cup of chai.
Non-fiction / Self-help:
Ikigai by Hector Garcia & Francesc Miralles
The Japanese philosophy of purpose and longevity, wrapped in beautiful simplicity. Perfect for introspection on a slow, rainy day.
The Comfort Book by Matt Haig
Bite-sized reminders of hope, joy, and being human. You can dip in and out of it; it’s a soft landing for hard days.

I feel like the universe conspires to make me read more every monsoon. Loved this list-warm drinks, drizzly windows, and books that match the mood? Now I have to choose some classics to curl up with
Your choices are just so cozy and totally fit those grey, rainy-day vibes.
Quite a great list of books that comfort or warm up the heart for those rainy days when you just want to stay in with a good book for hours. I am adding ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ by Alexander McCall Smith to my list.
I absolutely loved this cozy list! Rainy days are perfect for slowing down and diving into a good book. Your recommendations feel like the perfect companions for those quiet, comforting moments we all need. Thank you for sharing!

Ah! What a timing. I think the time is perfect to pick one from your list right now. That’s a wonderfully curated list. Soecially the children’s books, thanks for adding that too!
I LOVE your pictures and creatives, Shalini. Of course, I have noted the book suggestions too. Thank you for sharing.
Romance and rain are a match made in heaven, and for me, reading a romance while it is raining is the perfect cherry on the cake. Your list is quite comprehensive and I am going to choose the most romantic ones only.
A long list! I’d begin with Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood. That’s the kind of cheesy romance that brings a smile. Then, the Thursday Murder Club series is on OTT, so would like to see and read that. I’d avoid The Guest List, as too many movies have been made on that plot now. Japanese fiction is high on my list as I haven’t read any good author.
This list is such a warm hug on a rainy day! I’ve read a few of these, but now I’m adding Sweet Bean Paste and The House in the Cerulean Sea to my TBR. Loved how you included picks for every mood and age, bookmarking this for my next monsoon reading spree!
Rainy days call for a mind-boggling thriller/mystery. I am totally eyeing the two books you have listed here.
A long list- Loving it- but for my kids I prefer in his tender age little Indian authors in English and some regional language books too.
I’ve only read one title by Ali Hazelwood, The Love Hypothesis, and quite enjoyed it. Been meaning to read more of her work ever since but the ever-piling TBR hasn’t allowed me yet. Seeing one of hers in this well-curated list has reminded me of that desire. Thanks! Might just pick up this one by her after all

I have read just seven from this exhaustive list. I am not sure I would get to them considering the long long list of books that I have yet to read.
Perfect timing; today’s monsoon demands a good book and a warm drink! I love how the list spans all ages, from toddlers (Bear Snores On) to teens (Anne of Green Gables). The blend of fantasy, memoir, and fiction is just right for varied moods.
You read so much Shalini! These are fantastic recommendations! I hope I can finish at least a couple in this rainy season!
Thank you for sharing this list shalini. The guest list aand verity have been on .my Tbr already
Have read a few from your reccos here. The Guest List sounds like something I’ll enjoy since romance isn’t my cup of tea.
So many recommendations! Awesome. I haven’t read most of them, so now I have a huge-r TBR 🙂
That is quite a list. I have only read Before the Coffee Gets Cold. I am going to start with the thrillers. They are my favorites. Thanks for the recommendations.

That’s a first class book reco list! I have read Sweet bean paste, Kamogawa Food Detectives, Thursday Murder Club series… and I have added a bunch of the titles you suggested to my TBR!
These are perfect recommendations for the ongoing Delhi monsoon! Have added some to my TBR.
