“But, the bus will wait only for fifteen minutes”, Mira said over the phone.
“That’s okay. It will not be like last time. I will be there in five”, said Arjun before he hung up the call.
Mira hoped that he will not be late again like when they had met over a cup of coffee at Barista. She was leaving for work now to Chennai and Arjun had wanted to meet her before he left to Punjab, to join back to his Regiment.
“I told you that I will be on time”, his eyes sparkled as he saw her getting down the bus. “Once bitten, twice….”
“shy! I know!” Mira couldn’t suppress the smile that escaped her lips.
They decided to take a stroll down the road and he started blabbering. Mira was lost in her thoughts.
He doesn’t seem nervous now, unlike yesterday when he didn’t talk to me much. That’s good, isn’t it? May be he is feeling completely at ease. I would miss him though it was only a few hours I had spent in the last four days to the man I got engaged to. Only a handful of words exchanged between us! Will I be able to love him? Does he love me? Love? That is so cliched! But so is our wedding! Arranged marriage! How did I end up agreeing for it? And then, he seems decent. After all, an Army Officer is always a gentleman!
The driver blew the horn then and Mira came out of her reverie. She stopped and looked into his eyes. Sparks flew and there were butterflies in her stomach. She felt her skin grow hot in his deep gaze. Giving a smirk, he embraced her in a warm hug and ….
Did he kiss me on my forehead now? Oh!
The beating of her heart sounded so loud that it felt like the music of wind chimes in the air. She closed her eyes, her long smoky eyelashes nearly touching her cheeks.
As Mira boarded the bus, she found his sad eyes finding hers again. The pure simplicity of pain and joy rushed through her all at once as he stared hard at her.
Love was beginning to bud in their hearts..
