In the Army, one thing is constant- the tenures every two years! As they say, change is the only thing constant. We can either make a real hullabaloo of it or embrace it gracefully. It is in fact, fun and the excitement is infectious.
We at the Army are trained to behave and act in a particular way. It also demands changes like tenures where one needs to move from place to place- from home to home. As I said yesterday, it could be a one bedroom apartment you are allotted in a metro city like Delhi during this posting. The next could be a twin banglow in the abode of clouds, Shillong. Once in a blue moon, you might have to settle inside a tent or a shelter too. And the perks include exploring beautiful locations in our country which a civilian do not have access to, most of the times.
You might get two months prior notice, or a weeks time for the officer to report to the new posting location. And the horror of it! All the packing, shifting, moving, travel comes upon your head s an Army Wife. Your home will be adorned with cardboard boxes of various shapes and sizes, with bubble wraps and you will take out those 27 military boxes stored in the garage. And by the end of it you wonder, how that 310L refrigerator, 42″ Television set and the beautiful furniture should be packed. Of course they cannot be simply dumped into a truck.
Because you never know if you get an accommodation at the next posting. And if you, by some sheer luck, get one, it could be after ten months.
What does that mean? That all your stuff will be lying in some shed or room, unattended all this while.
You would be caught up in a circle of dining outs, dinners, parties, the packing, shifting, good byes and travelling. And kids? New schools, new friends….life is a roller- coaster ride. You are in a rhythm and ambiance is perfectly set with the big dhaitons/army trunks parked outside your soon-to-be-someone-else’s home, the armed guards, the cracking of flower pots. But guess what, we fondly remember all the quarters we have stayed so far. I have stayed in a temporary quarters, two permanent ones in our single tenure on Pune- 165D, 258D, 251C to be exact. But, life is fun. It gears you up to face the unexpected. 🙂

I think it’s your strong love for him and by connection, for the country that helps you a little to adjust and maybe even enjoy the roaming, alle? 🙂 And you’re right, it might even bring you to places that others might not be able to see. Wish only the best comes to you and P.

If I were in your position, I would have locked myself up in the fridge and refused to move out of the house 😛
Just goes to show how much sacrifices army wives make! 🙂
