Given an option between going out and being at home, I would rather choose to curl up with a book and a mug of coffee. But there are days when I love to wear my nine-inch heels, flaunt that little black dress and pretend to like people and their company. And I tell you, in the Army, we have plenty of opportunities for the same.
Wouldn’t you love to dress up in a cutoff denim shorts, buttoned up shirt, a western-style cowboy hat and a cowboy boots? Wouldn’t you love to put on those gorgeous anarkhalis or lehengas, gold and silver braid, finest head and nose jewelry with those beautiful necklaces, earrings and rings for a Mughal empress attire? Or in a beautiful white and gold Kerala saree, your hair adorned with jasmine flowers for a traditional costume? Or those ravishing IMA Ball, or May Queen Ball with the gentleman cadets dressed in tuxedos and their partners in LBDs? Or why not in a simple chiffon saree for the flower themed party?
But you know what the fun part is? Your soldier would be dressed up too- age, rank no bar! Yes, we love to have fun, to get away from the mundane routine tasks, from life’s fearful realities. We are ready to shell out some amount of money every month hosting parties at home, too. We love to gift a token of love and appreciation to our hostess- be it a champagne bottle or chocolates for the kids. There could be larger than life parties or simple, cute ones.
Parties are times of relaxation. It helps in creating beautiful bonds of friendship and such celebrations helps in strengthening them. We celebrate the lil’ things in life- your kids birthday, your anniversary, your birthdays. We have official events too like the Unit Raising Day or a Dining In or Wining In. We are one family which celebrates each and every festival- be it Holi, Onam or Baisakhi. Be it Eid, Diwali or Karwa Chauth. Be it Janmashtami, Christmas or Lohri – Religion, Region no bar!
I want to ask you, can you imagine dancing with your husband and kids when you reach the age of 40? 50? or 60? I may sound weird to you, but isn’t life too short to worry about petty things? Would you live out your days, brooding over things you can’t control? Wouldn’t you love to live with absolutely no care for the society or what they think of us?
We love to put on our dancing shoes and often dance to the same old tunes of Summer of 69 or scream at the top of the lungs when the DJ plays, Tumne kabhi kisise pyar kiya? Kabhi kisiko dil diya and then shake our legs to Mere Umar ki naujawaano….! We believe in living life to the fullest, forgetting the terror, fears and hardships.

Nine inch heels! I haven’t graduated from two inch heels at all! 😀
I wouldn’t really want to attend a party, but would surely want to join a party like this. It would be truly unique, wouldn’t it? 🙂

I do remember some parties when my husband was in the United States military. I’m not sure we ever had commissioned offers present but there were definitely non-coms and also the enlisted rank. And rank did not matter for the night.
