Men in Uniform- that itself is charm!
The 10-yr old me, who sat behind Dad’s gypsy, seeing him saluting the officers and subordinates, made me make up my mind. Yes, the admiration started then! And when Dad asked me who I wanted to marry, I said, “An Army Officer”- hands down!
Was it just the fascination of a teenager? Or the respect and reverence with which they carry their Uniforms? Or the life of Army that I always knew? But I knew what I wanted and touch wood! It was as if my Man was sent from above!
The first time I saw him wear the Uniform was when I was at the Pathankot Army Base. The grandeur and smartness is out of the world! But little did I know that he would be having three trunks full of his Uniforms. Yes, they have at least 15 different kinds of them- Dangris, the combats, the summer mufti, the winter mufti, the blazers, the formals, the regimental dress, the National dress, PT dress, games dress, ceremonial dress/No.1 dress, No.2 dress/Service dress, Mess dress.. (Dress? Why is it called a dress?? Phew!). You should also understand that the Uniform is not complete without the Ranks, the medals, the Ties, Belts, Braces, Buttons, The Lanyards, the Caps and the Footwear! Phew!
And the time and effort to maintain them- prim and proper without even a thread out of place- pressed to perfection- hung on the hangers in his exclusive wardrobe. The stars on his shoulder are polished day after day as if fallen right from the skies, so does the boots and the belt.
The mere sight on an Officer clad in his Uniform commands respect! it denotes discipline and the passion with which they wear them radiates pride. It is often difficult to differentiate among them, probably what they are trained for to perform his duties in a unified manner and winning us laurels and ultimately, peace. A Uniform thus becomes an integral part of a soldier, the reason behind why he volunteers the sense of responsibility before taking up the challenges in front of him. This in fact, is their one true love. And I can vouch for it.

Well written. 🙂 I agree with you. The sight of an officer clad in his uniform does command respect. Here too, we see them in the big trucks (for lack of a better word, if it’s not the right one) and some smile back at us when we smile at them. I didn’t know they had so many different kinds of uniforms though. Is it hard (at least at first) for an army wife to remember the names of those uniforms correctly?

I am absolutely certain, nothing can match the charm of a smart officer in his uniform. Hollywood and Bollywood both have evidences of flouting this drop-dead charm in so many movies having actors sport the uniform with aviators of course! On a serious note, indeed the uniform merits the treatment you mention as well as the respect it commands. Awesome post!

Hehehe. There’s this book by Jeffrey Archer by the name: The Fourth Estate. In this book, the main character sews on stripes on his shoulder when he reaches the next rank in the army. And he does so with such pride and reverence!
The polishing stars part was too good! 😀
